We recommend drinking 64 ounces of water each day. Talk with your healthcare provider prior to changing the amount of water you drink as it can affect certain health conditions and medications.
There are many different recommendations and viewpoints on what counts towards hydration. That’s because, in addition to your daily drinking water, your body gets water from the foods you eat and beverages you drink, all of which contributes to your overall hydration status. We recommend drinking 64 ounces of water each day because water plays a key role in supporting our health. Water helps remove waste from the body, and being well-hydrated helps all of our organs and systems function properly. According to Dr. A’s Habits of Health®, water is a critical component of the body, making up between 55 and 60 percent of our body weight. Since our body cannot store water, we need to replenish it often, which is why drinking 64 ounces of water each day is one of the core Habits of Health®!*
So, while you may have other calorie- and carbohydrate-free beverages, such as unsweetened tea and coffee, on the OPTAVIA program and technically, they will contribute to your overall hydration, we still recommend drinking 64 ounces of water each day. Of course, hydration needs do vary from person to person, so we encourage you to listen to your body and to talk with your healthcare provider for additional guidance.
