What to expect on the first few days?

As you begin your journey to optimal wellbeing, you may feel hungry, tired, or irritable as your body adjusts to a new way of eating. This is temporary, but make sure you keep a close watch on your hunger during this time. If you’re excessively hungry or tired in the first few days, have an extra Fueling or a couple of additional ounces of lean protein (e.g., 2 hard boiled eggs, 2, (1-oz.) low-fat cheese sticks, 2-3 oz. cooked chicken breast, etc.). It’s better to have an extra Fueling than to go off your program entirely. Within a few days, these symptoms should disappear, leaving you feeling energized and confident. Remember, the support of your independent OPTAVIA Coach will be so important as you begin your journey, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you have questions or need additional support.

Here are a few additional tips to make the adjustment period easier:

  • Download and use the Habits of Health App to track your Fuelings and water intake.
  • Stay hydrated with water.*
  • Choose a start date when you don’t expect any social food-centered events.
  • Stay busy.
  • Approach your health journey one day at a time.
  • Open up Your LifeBook, put your name in it, and read the introduction.
  • Avoid temptations and stay focused on your health goals.
  • Sip on 1 cup of broth or eat 2 dill pickle spears (as needed in the first few days) if you do not have a sodium restriction.
  • Wait to start exercising for 2-3 weeks on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan®. We recommend checking with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise program.

*We recommend drinking 64 ounces of water each day. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to changing the amount of water you drink as it can affect certain health conditions and medications.
