OPTAVIA offers meal plan options for people with diabetes, all of which are designed to help you achieve a healthy weight with a calorie and carbohydrate-controlled approach to support glycemic control. The nutritional parameters of our meal plans as a whole, including the nutritional makeup of the OPTAVIA Fuelings and the spacing of the meals throughout the day, makes this program a great option for people with insulin resistance seeking glycemic and weight control.
On the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan®, you’ll get about 80 to 100 grams of carbohydrate per day; that’s 3-4x less than what most people consume on an average day. Because you may be consuming fewer carbohydrates than you were previously, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider before starting so they are aware and can adjust medications as needed.
The OPTAVIA Diabetes Guide outlines three meal plan options for people with diabetes: the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan, Optimal Weight 4 & 2 & 1 Plan®, and Optimal Weight 5 & 2 & 2 Plan® (refer to the decision tree in the diabetes guide on pg. 7). Each meal plan teaches you to eat six small meals a day, an important habit that helps space carbohydrate and protein intake evenly throughout the day.
Depending on which meal plan you choose, four or five of your six daily meals will be our scientifically-designed OPTAVIA Fuelings. Each Fueling provides an approximate 1 to 1 ratio of protein to carbohydrate (about 11-15 grams of both protein and carbohydrate), plus dietary fiber (about 4-6 grams) to help keep blood sugar levels stable; they are also lower in fat.
We have dozens of OPTAVIA Fuelings to choose from, each with a nearly identical nutritional profile, meaning they are all appropriate for people with diabetes. Your remaining meal(s) will consist of a healthy Lean & Green meal, consisting of lean protein, non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fats, that you will learn to prepare for you and your family.
Work closely with your healthcare provider or diabetes specialist to monitor blood sugar and medication dosages. Continued medical monitoring will be necessary throughout your weight loss journey.
